The dangers of teen vaping: What parents need to know

In recent years, the rise of teen vaping and nicotine use has become a significant public health concern. With new nicotine products like e-cigarettes and tobacco-free nicotine pouches gaining popularity, it’s more important than ever for parents, educators and communities to understand the risks associated with these substances and how to talk to young people about them.

Why do teens vape?

It’s helpful to understand what draws teens to vape in the first place. E-cigarettes, or vapes, contain nicotine, a powerful stimulant found in tobacco and non-tobacco products, which affects the brain as soon as 20 seconds after use. Many adolescents turn to nicotine for a quick burst of energy and stress relief.

But this temporary effect comes at a high cost. Research shows that nicotine addiction can develop as easily as addiction to illegal drugs like heroin or cocaine.

E-cigarettes have been widely marketed as a “healthier” alternative to traditional cigarettes, but they often contain high levels of nicotine—sometimes as much as the equivalent of 500 cigarettes.

Additionally, popular tobacco-free nicotine pouches are aggressively advertised on social media platforms that many teenagers use, making them attractive to teens and easy to obtain.

Why is vaping bad for teens?

As a parent, it’s important to understand the facts about vaping and the serious dangers of teen vaping in particular. The teenage brain continues to develop until around age 25, and nicotine use can have long-lasting negative effects.

Studies have linked teen vaping and adolescent nicotine use to changes in attention, learning, mood regulation and impulse control. Young users are also at a higher risk of experiencing anxiety and depression.

From a heart health standpoint, nicotine causes blood vessels to narrow, making them stiff and less flexible over time. This reduces oxygen and nutrient flow throughout the body, potentially leading to long-term heart and circulation problems.

How to talk to your teen about vaping
