Biography
"Dr. Bates received a Bachelor of Science in biology from Rhodes College in Memphis, TN, and his MD from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Following an obstetrics and gynecology residency at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, he practiced obstetrics and gynecology in rural Georgia before his fellowship. Dr. Bates completed his Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility fellowship at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He subsequently served on the faculty at Wilford Hall Medical Center before his 10+ years as the fellowship and division director at UAB where he attained tenured full professor status. Dr. Bates is a board-certified specialist in obstetrics and gynecology and subspecialist in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. His focus involves polycystic ovarian syndrome and its metabolic sequelae, as well as numerous aspects of infertility, including assisted reproductive technologies (IVF) resulting in numerous chapters and reviews, over 50 peer-reviewed publications and hundreds of local, regional and national presentations. His clinical acumen and bedside manner have made him a patient favorite with multiple awards. Dr. Bates is also active with numerous leadership roles in the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, the Society of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, and the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technologies. Dr. Bates' commitment to education has resulted in numerous teaching and education awards including the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists mentor of the year in 2016."
