Laura Bruce Petrey, MD

Dr. Petrey is a Clinical Professor at Texas A&M College of Medicine at Texas A&M Health Science Center, Dallas. She attended the University of Mississippi School of Medicine where she was honored with membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and the Herrin Hess Foundation Scholarship. She then completed a General Surgery residency at Rush University Medical Center and Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL. After residency, Dr. Petrey received her fellowship specialty training in Trauma and Surgical Critical at the University of Tennessee at Memphis, a regional medical center with one of the busiest Level One trauma centers in the nation. Dr. Petrey is an associate attending in the Department of General Surgery at Baylor University Medical Center, part of Baylor Scott & White Health, the first female General Surgery Attending in the Department of Surgery since it was formed in 1920. Dr. Petrey is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Texas A&M University System Health Science Center. She is closely involved in the education of medical students while they rotate on General Surgery. Dr. Petrey is also the Program Director for the Trauma and Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center, which she initiated with the help of her partners. Dr. Petrey has always been dedicated to research in Trauma, Critical Care and Acute General Surgery. Her special interests are trying to determine the causes of readmission of trauma patients to the hospital, cost effectiveness in all areas of healthcare and post-traumatic stress disorder in trauma patients. Dr. Petrey served as the Secretary of the Medical Staff at Baylor University Medical Center, part of Baylor Scott & White Health, in Dallas (2014-2016) and the President of the Medical Staff (2016-2018) responsible for over a thousand physicians. She also serves on the ICU Quality Committee, the ICU Clinical Practice Council, Professional Standards Committee, Allied Health Committee, Credentials Committee and Best Care Quality Committee. She also served as President of the Baylor University Medical Center Women's Physician Forum from 2005-2010. Dr. Petrey has been a member of Urgent Surgery Associates since 2001, specializing in Acute Care General Surgery, Surgical Trauma and Surgical Critical Care. She also is a member of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma and the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST) and the Society of Critical Care Medicine and Southwestern Surgical Congress. Dr. Petrey is board certified in both General Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. She also is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
